I wanted to invite you to be a part of our book launch with Gerry Straub, OFS.

The Sunrise of the Soul is the fruit of the last 24 years of Gerry Straub's unexpected new life and journey of transformation that took him from the glamour of Hollywood to the horror of the worst slums on earth. He went from being a network television producer to making documentary films on global poverty. He went from being an avowed atheist to a deep man of faith walking in the footsteps of St. Francis. When he wasn't filming, he was giving his "poverty and prayer" presentations at more than 250 Catholic churches, high schools, and universities across the United States, as well as in Canada, France, Italy, and Hungary.
In 2015, he felt God tell him to stop filming the poor and go live among the poor. He now lives in a crowded slum in Haiti where he and his wife operate a home of hope and healing called the Santa Chiara Children's Center for 69 abandoned kids, 24 of whom are still in diapers. Living in a home with 69 kids in Haiti means that the stillness and silence needed for contemplation are virtually nonexistent. He has now begun to commit himself to the rejuvenating power of authentic solitude in order to turn his attention to his own inner spiritual poverty. In the silent predawn darkness of each Haitian morning he waits, reflects and prays for two hours. This book emerged slowly from those many lonely hours of silence. It's a story of the Gospel in action for today.

Prayer is the opposite of multi-tasking. It is the gathering of the mind, body, emotions, thoughts, and spirit into the same geography and inviting God to be present there. In this retreat we will gather (safely) as a community to explore praying in color—the visual, active, and meditative prayer practice introduced in the 2007 book Praying in Color: Drawing A New Path to God and its 2020 expanded/updated version. If you are word-weary, restless, antsy, or anxious in prayer or just looking for a new way to connect to God, come explore the versatile practice called praying in color.
